APNI Brings Africa’s Spirit of Service to Tiglin’s Homeless Cafe

Updated: Jul 2

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, the African Professional Network of Ireland (APNI) team hosted a remarkable African-themed volunteer night at Tiglin’s Lighthouse Homeless Cafe. The Lighthouse is a welcoming community hub for individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, or social exclusion, filled with compassion, dignity, and support.

This special evening celebrated African culture and community service. The APNI team came together to serve over 100 people food, enjoy traditional cuisines, appreciate vibrant clothing and decorations, and connect warmly with the people who call this space their community.

The evening was filled with warmth and laughter, and the meal, featuring Jollof rice with grilled chicken laps, plantain, and veggies, plus a simple dessert of puff puff and vanilla ice cream, was provided by Lami’s Kitchen. Everyone tasted the food and could feel the difference; it reminded us that sharing what we have can create an amazing environment for someone in need. It wasn’t only the food that was satisfying, but the passion with which it was served. APNI’s team of volunteers played a key role, decorating the space, assisting in the kitchen, serving food, and engaging with the guests.

The experience was much more than just volunteering. As one volunteer put it,

Some want to volunteer but don’t have the time; some have the time but choose not to. I feel privileged to be here, to bring a smile to someone’s face, especially someone who feels isolated or excluded.”

Other volunteers described their service as a powerful opportunity for learning and growth. Some used their skills from mental health training to aid those in need, adding a human dimension to their practice. All agreed that this opportunity helps foster kindness, compassion, and a deep understanding of community, something everyone should experience.

We were also honored by the presence of Senator Aubrey McCarthy, who recognized and appreciated the work that APNI is doing to bring the community together, celebrate culture, and make a positive difference in people’s lives.

APNI looks forward to continuing this tradition, bringing food, friendship, compassion, and dignity to those who need it most, and hopefully extending the opportunity for more community members to get involved in service. The APNI team is especially grateful to Tiglin’s manager, our fellow volunteers, and everyone on our team for making the evening such an amazing experience.
