The Rail Accident Investigation Unit (RAIU) is an independent investigation unit within the
Department of Transport. It is responsible for the investigation of accidents or incidents on
the national railway; the DART; the LUAS and Heritage railways.
The RAIU's investigations are carried out in accordance with the Railway Safety Directive
(EU) 2016/798. The purpose of an investigation is to improve railway safety by establishing,
in so far as possible, the cause or causes of an accident with a view to making
recommendations for the avoidance of accidents in the future.
The RAIU currently has a vacancy for a Senior Investigator - Mechanical (at Engineer Grade
I level). This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and committed individual with the
relevant qualifications and experience to carry out purposeful work in supporting the vital
work of the RAIU.
Reporting to the Chief Investigator, the role of Senior Investigator-Mechanical will involve the
